May’s Yogi’s of the Month are Heidi Bridges, Lyn Curtis and Patricia Ostojitsch.
These ladies all started the Over 55’s yoga class at the same time and have since developed a friendship and encouraged each other through their yoga journey.
They now attend other classes at Rosieglo Yoga and I am loving being part of their progress. They were all pretty new to yoga to begin with and now have a solid yoga practise.
But it’s their winning attitude that makes me smile. They’re committed to a weekly yoga practise, are always willing to work to their edge and continue to develop a deeper awareness of their minds and bodies and how yoga can make a difference.
Their blossoming friendship embodies the community spirit that we endeavour to nurture at Rosieglo.
Say hello to our Yogi’s of the Month.
Names: Heidi Bridges, Lyn Curtis and Patricia Ostojitsch.
How and why did you find your way on to the mat?
Heidi: It was the opening of the new Rosieglo Yoga studio and seeing that there is a class for the over 55’s plus a free taster session, that encouraged me to have another go at Yoga and I am so very glad that I did.
Lyn: I saw an advert on Facebook when Rosie was first starting up. I loved the idea that there was a class aimed at over 55s as I had tried another class and was totally intimidated by the youth and skill of the other people!
Trish: I was looking for an activity to replace an exercise class I had been doing locally that had folded. Rosieglo popped up on a Facebook feed and as they were offering both a free taster class and a class for the more mature lady I came, tried and got hooked.
How did you feel after your first yoga class at Rosieglo Yoga?
Heidi: So very pleased that I really enjoyed it and found a class that I wanted to return too.
Lyn: Really positive! It was s totally different experience from previous attempts to get into yoga – supportive, encouraging and inclusive.
Trish: I have a longstanding back injury that still causes problems at times . My back felt so much better and I had a very enjoyable morning
Have you noticed any benefits or changes in yourself since practising yoga?
Heidi: It has made me be more aware of my posture when I am out and about and according to a friend my shape has changed although to be honest, I haven’t noticed! Mainly I just feel good that I am doing something to help me as the years pile on!!!
Lyn: Yes! My flexibility has definitely improved. I feel stronger and am working to try to strengthen my neck and improve my posture in everyday life too. I try to incorporate breathing techniques outside of class too.
Trish: I am more flexible than I was . My core is stronger, my stomach flatter and my back is less troublesome than it was. I also have better posture.
What do you like most about practising at Rosieglo Yoga?
Heidi: I really enjoy the class, the encouragement Rosie gives me as a teacher, the lovely space and the lovely friends I have met.
Lyn: Rosie! The non-threatening, personalised approach has really worked for me. I have felt encouraged to challenge myself and have made some lovely new friends!
Trish: Small and friendly classes and a very, very patient teacher in Rosie
What’s your favourite pose at the moment or what are you enjoying most?
Heidi: I don’t really have a favourite pose although I do like the plank, but mainly I do feel a sense of achievement when I can do the balancing poses, which I know isn’t that often!
Lyn: I actually like the balance exercises! The sun salutation routine has become easier and I can now hold the plank! My favourite part is still the relaxation at the end if I’m totally honest!
Trish: I enjoy all the poses but cat / cow really helps my back
What words of wisdom would you share with someone who is new to yoga or thinking of giving it a go?
Heidi: Just go for it and do your very best, but mainly enjoy it.
Lyn: Start with a small group aimed at your age group/beginner level like offered at Rosieglo so that you can build up at your own pace. It’s been a really positive addition to my post-retirement schedule!
Trish: Go try – you have nothing to lose and everything to gain
