August’s Yogi of the Month is Michelle Atkins.
Michelle has built up a dedicated practise over the last few months and it is evident in her time on the mat. She has conscientiously worked to restore herself back to health after suffering with an acute bad back. At one point she struggled to walk but she has worked mindfully and with patience to build strength and flexibility.
Michelle always enters the studio with a bright smile and her inner connection deepens on the mat with every practise. Well done Michelle!
Say hello to our Yogi of the Month…
Name: Michelle Atkins
How and why did you find your way on to the mat?
A year ago I was invited on a yoga retreat with some friends and thought I would try it out after a terrible period of stress and depression, plus a bad back. It changed my life. I became aware of how important it was to look after ‘me’, so that I can better support my relationship with others.
How did you feel after your first yoga class at Rosieglo Yoga?
I really enjoyed the small group and method of teaching which has greatly improved my practice, especially as I was so new to it. So good to have the moves broken down which helped me protect and strengthen my back.
Have you noticed any benefits or changes in yourself since practising yoga?
Massively! It has really benefited so many areas physically and mentally- I just couldn’t live without it now. It has improved my strength, keeps me flexible (important in your 50’s) but most of all helps to calm me and ground me.
What do you like most about practising at Rosieglo Yoga?
The lovely small oasis behind the Bath Road. I loved it when there was a power cut and we had lots of fairy lights and candles! What I appreciate most though is Rosie’s un-biased, un-egotistical approach to every individual reminding us that we are made differently and there is no ‘better’ or ‘worse’ way to practise.
What’s your favourite pose at the moment or what are you enjoying most?
That’s a hard one and so tempted to say child’s pose, but I think Warrior 2, because when you pause, make the small adjustments suggested – shoulders down, weight placed evenly between your feet and pressing into the back edge of your rear foot, tummy held in and tailbone tucked under, it makes me feel empowered and grounded.
What words of wisdom would you share with someone who is new to yoga or thinking of giving it a go?
Do it! Keep at it & don’t give up, even if you find it hard, which I do a lot of the time, but am learning to be more patient when I feel challenged – the breathing really helps! I believe it will help you in so many ways and I love the fact that it’s for anyone and any ability we are all so different and it’s your journey and no-one else’s. Do it for you.
